Summer in Deer Valley, Utah

After few months of down time in Park City, Utah and cool weather things are beginning to look a lot like summer. Besides the weather the surest sign that summer is here is when the festivals begin. Today lets focus on Deer Valley, Utah.

Deer Valley has turned into a year round resort with hiking, biking, dining, summer adventure camps for the young ones and many other exciting activities within a small drive. The biggest draws to Deer Valley in the summer is its summer concert series. Here is a list of major events through the 4th of July:

June 23: Motherlode Canyon Band June 30: Las LaRue July 3: Utah Syumphony - Patriotic Celebration July 4: St. Regis Big Stars, Bright Nights Outdoor Concert Series - OneRepublic

Ski and Snowboard Expo

So the Beginning of another season and I can only dream it's gonna be a good winter. The weather so far has been somewhat normal,I wish it was a lot colder and the snow guns were firing away everywhere. With that said lets move on to the subject at hand. The Boston Ski and Snowboard Expo at the baside Expo Center. I will be attending this Saturday Nov. 21st. It runs from Nov 19th to the 22nd.

I went last year and grabbed a bunch of discount and free lift passes, not to mention I won a free trip to the berkshires. It is not just for northeast resorts either, there were canadian resorts there, Tahoe region, and Colorado. I brought my 2 and 4 year olds and they had a great time. I cannot say enough good things about the Expo. All I can say is if you are a serious Skier or Rider you needto get there for at least one day. You'll save alot of money in the long run and have a blast while your there.

SO if your in the Boston area this weekend and want to see the hottest new gear, grab some killer gear discounts and possibly lots of free stuff, stop in. You won't regret it.

See you on the slopes folks Bryan

My Travels

My name is Bryn Carey, President of Ski Butlers and the fall is my travel season to make sure all our locations are ready for the winter months. People always ask me which resort is my favorite to visit, who has the best skiing, which shop has the most potential and so forth. I guess my best answer to these questions is that each place is so unique and has there own qualities that it is tough to answer. Whistler if the weather right has the best skiing, Jackson Hole the best vertical, Utah the best snow, Colorado the most impressive views and so forth. Traveling is what makes my job so good, there are not many people in this world where there business trips include Denver, Breck, Vail, Park City, Whistler, and Heavenly all in two weeks (that is my current schedule) but hey someone needs to do it! If you want to follow my travels on Twitter go to www.twitter.com/skibutlers or if you want to visit our site to learn more about our award winning Ski Rental Delivery service then go for it. I will post from time to time throughout the winter!

Ski Trips: Five Things Every Parent Should Know

We primarily ski at a mountain which markets heavily to boy scout troops and youth groups. What I have witnessed is the stuff of parental nightmares: Non-skiing scout masters or chaperones knocking back beverages while their unsupervised hoard of charges careens insanely down black diamonds; kids on black diamond slopes with their coats unzipped, bare-headed, their Velcro boot straps flapping in the wind, hunched over in a lock kneed snowplow; kids without helmets and little or no skill skiing in the glades (trees).

I confess, I am preaching what I did not initially practice. Simply put, I didn't know what I didn't know and I turned my two sons loose on the slopes with no forethought and no plan. I rather passively figured if ski resorts sold lift tickets for kids, skiing must be safe and simple. And while statistics show that skiing is actually relatively safe, there are myriad risks. Some of them are huge. More often the consequences are financial or merely inconvenient by comparison.

Reliving History on the Slopes: President’s Day Weekend

President's Day is a day many of us look back in history at the great accomplishments and contributions of those who came before us. What became quite evident over this past President's Day holiday weekend is that many skiers chose to expand on the tradition of looking back by raiding gear archives. The last 30 years of skiing history was on display. Skis and boots that have been lying unused and untouched for sometimes decades were pressed into service for this observation.

As a relative newcomer to the sport, the weekend past gave me a glimpse into the not-too-distant past where skis were straight, boots were oddly angled wedges, and bindings were today's equivalent of a paperclip.

Listen: I'm all for being frugal and for reducing waste. (Ok, in truth, I'm probably not just frugal, I can be downright cheap.) When I travel, I shop around for the best rates. But I won't rent a 25 yr. old car that's been sitting unused in a garage and lacks anti-lock brakes and air bags. I won't stay in a motel with a methamphetamine lab next door. That kind of regional flavor I can do without. The few bucks I might save are quickly paid in misery, discomfort, and risk.

Tips for Late (In Years) Arrivers

I'm probably not your typical skier or ski site blogger for that matter. I grew up surrounded by corn fields. I'm more than a little embarrassed to admit that one of my favorite movies is Field of Dreams. I don't really like baseball or Kevin Costner all that much, but we gravitate to that which we know...or want to know.

The deal is I somehow ended up on east coast near Washington, DC where we somehow ended up being able to afford a mountain cabin in Canaan Valley, WV in the Allegheny Mountains. With two alpine resorts, and one Nordic ski venue within minutes of our house, I was kinda obligated to learn to ski. Exceptin' how I was already 49 years old, female, and of the stockier persuasion. This should be sufficient disincentive, but not for me. First off, I'm married to an expert telemark skier. Second off, I hate being left behind. But at 49, I kept my goals modest. As is true with most female skiers, I wanted to ski in control and with grace. I was not interested in speed or gettin' air (I was decidedly anti-air).

My goal for Year One was to flawlessly ski our local 2 mile green from top to bottom. I exceeded that even having lost several weeks to a knee injury that was slow to heal. Goals should be attainable.

Airlines Baggage Fees to Hit Ski and Snowboard Bags for the First Time

Park City, Utah...I could never quite understand how skiers and golfers could check their equipment for free. My lightweight bike, windsurf and surf boards have always been charged a $75 fee each way. Forget about the good old days, fees for skis are here and they're here to stay. Over the past year, the troubled airline industry has been looking for ways to increase revenues, leading them to start charging for every service they can think of; meals, snacks, curbside check-in, etc. You name it, you pay for it. We knew it would come and it has now arrived.
